“Wouldn’t you know it…coupon’s expired!” *Giggles
Happy Monday night everyone!
We’re finally at the end of another
loooong Monday…
luckily mine was also action packed:D
After my normal routine of dropping off my nieces & nephews I had the pleasure of taking Ms. Deliliah to the doctors office. Over the weekend she decided she wanted to use one of those “ear tips” as she calls Q-tips, but stuck the tip in a little too far. No one knew what she had done until she complained of blood dripping out from her ear. (**YIKES**) Of course we were all kinda freaked so we took her in just to get things “checked out.”
Long story short, after a 90 minute wait the doctor referred us to a ear, nose & throat specialist. She hadn’t seen where the bleeding originated & there was liquid building up so, “better safe than sorry!” Now Terry will just have to negotiate w/the insurance company for a specialist on file for her insurance plan:D Gotta love it…*Giggles
Next stop was Tavares & RALSC Govt. Affairs committee meeting. Everyone got to see each other after the long holiday break, make a game plan for the upcoming year & just basically recharge off each others combined energy. I was delighted to find out that Bill Deese, Barbara Stamm & Debbie had all already earned their way into the $99 Club! As RPAC chair this year, it sure does make my job easier to have such educated leaders on my team:D CLICK HERE to learn more–> RPAC
Last but not least, I made that gorgeous drive back to Clermont using the drive time to contact several new clients & update past clients. I even had a chance to pick up e-mail/voice mail early & I found a trend in the subject matter…
“WHY ARE YOU HAVING YOUR BIRTHDAY PARTY AT THE ELKS LODGE???”
Well, I’m actually glad you asked…
During the holidays we all seem to catch the spirit of giving & have holiday parties w/toy drop offs or canned food drives, which usually keep us feeling all warm & fuzzy until the next holiday season. My friend Jeff Royle had such good turnout at his birthday/holiday party, Toys for Tots thought he was a large company!
I really loved Jeff’s idea and others who use their birthdays as just another venue to give a little something back to the community. On my birthday I think the greatest gift anyone could give me would be just to come share their night with me at the Elks Lodge. Together we will celebrate all the gifts & blessings I have been given in life (such as friends & family).
I chose the Elks lodge as the perfect place to have my birthday party because as we all enjoy the festivities, our money is going to a worthy cause, the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks. A nonprofit organization with deep roots in our community, history & charity.
OUR MISSION:To inculcate the principles of Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity; to recognize a belief in God; to promote the welfare and enhance the happiness of its Members; to quicken the spirit of American patriotism; to cultivate good fellowship; to perpetuate itself as a fraternal organization, and to provide for its government, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States of America will serve the people and communities through benevolent programs, demonstrating that Elks Care and Elks Share. So remember…I could go anywhere in the world to celebrate my birthday, but there’s no place I’ld rather be than surrounded by the Best People On Earth, (BPOE). The Elks Lodge is located at 705 W Minneola Ave. Clermont Fl 34711, I hope you can join me make this a year to remember!
“Don’t forget, the ELKS is not only a wonderful organization that provides much needed scholarships & Veteran services, it’s a great place to PARTY!”

Let me explain my mother is Korean, so she has a distinct Asian wisdom behind her statements. I learned this long ago as she told me Korean “fairytales/fables” before bed, translation is a very sardonic mistress.
“Unquestionably the Hans Christen Andersen of Korea: she had spun webs of reality where baby frogs buried their mother by the sea shore out of love and sisters were washed ashore still embracing after being lost at sea.”
As an adult I realize that maybe that’s not the reason she is crying. I came to this realization at 4 am, after opening a box of Pizza my son Jeffrey had ordered for lunch. I haven’t been sleeping well worried about work/economy/election/Jeff and especially my mom’s recent strokes, so I figure the pizza will put me in carb coma for at least a few hours.
As I took a bite of Jeff’s pizza, I thought about how scared I still was about losing my mom. This pizza was a perfect example of what she always conveyed in her bedtime stories. I realized that those last few nights in Denmark actually put me in my mother’s shoes for once. I was a strange person in a foreign land, surrounded by people speaking a language foreign to me, missing my mother & family who could be ill or even dying, but tied steadfast by the love for her husband.
“By the second bite, I knew why my mother always cried when she told me bedtime stories….”
“I am truly blessed…each time I look at my mother’s smile or see her eyes in my son, I thank GOD for making me a part of their lives.”
Yes, his music was amazing. (Almost daring us not to move with
Sometimes the music & the beat can trick the mind into not listening to the message of the storyteller. Death is a constant that gives us one last chance to hear everything again, tempered by the wisdom of time.

FISHING has always been one of my family’s favorite ways to spend time together without having to worry about fighting or complaining. Somehow, working together toward a common goal helps to wipe away all the negative things life tends to pile on our plate. Man (or woman) against fish seems like an unfair match up, but any fishermen out there knows…once in a while, the man actually stands a chance:D
Since the earliest recorded history, man has lived off the land in order to survive. Fishing was one of the more advanced skills men taught themselves in order to put food on the table. When faced by an ocean full of fish & just a thin line w/some bait attached to it, it’s no wonder that bringing home a basket full of fish not only meant a full belly but a chest full of pride.
“The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad. ~A.K. Best”

We ask a simple question

My Morten is floating on cloud 9. Yesterday May 21, 2009 was LCRC’s big day! Our first meeting with “the City” about his dream, Lake County Rowing Club. We had an appointment with Darren Gray, Assistant City Manager at 9:30.
Jeffrey’s Academic Excellence Award & tonight’s East Ridge HS football game. (Jeff is the starting Jr Varsity Wide Receiver & it’s his 1st official HS game.) Since Morten only had a $5 bill we also had enough to be happy about our 9:30 meeting & I asked for everyone’s prayers that things would go well. Everyone joked throughout the breakfast about their rowing skills, peach Chik-Fil-a milkshakes & we discovered Richard & Neville had actually rowed! Ray (Gamegood) Goodgame told about his island adventures which excited Morten since he had also been to Ray’s is
land many times. (Such a small world!) Our friend & rowing coach Karen Dorrs (Dorrs Plumbing) joined us at Kiwanis since she recently joined the Chamber of Commerce. Cuqui Whitehead had explained we are all the same people basically & she’ld be a wonderful extention to the family. Our family really pumped Morten up so instead of being his usually quiet self he was actually visibly energized about the meeting w/Darren.
We arrived at City Hall & were greeted in the 1st floor lobby by Debbie Kiely (friend, rowing coach, 19 yr Carrier employee/mgr) who was as excited as Morten. David Teske the City’s Parks & Recreation Manager walked out of his office at almost the exact same time & I almost giggled as I saw identical grins on every ones faces. There was a definite feeling that “something good” was happening today. As the elevator opened; Morten, David, Debbie, Karen & I stepped inside. This symbolic 1st step toward the history of Lake County Rowing Club occured at exactly 9:28 am. We would be on time for our meeting with Darren!
David directed us across the lobby through impressive glass doors that lead to an even more impressive conference room. The center of the room was dominated by a big long wooden table with lots of high backed comfortable chairs. Somehow I could feel the butterflies in Morten’s tummy just by looking at his shy smile as he squeezed my hand. We all stood wondering where we were “allowed” to sit.
After the introductions & small talk about wives, families & children Darren asked, “Now what are we here for today?” ROWING: Morten began by telling him about his dream to start a rowing club here in Clermont. He told of how he started looking for a place to row & discovered Orlando Rowing Club was the closest place established. After spending his days walking the shores of Lake Minneola this information astounded him. He continued by explaining his love of the sport of rowing, how ideal the area was for non motorized boats & belief that it could help enrich the lives of the people in our community. Debbie added her experiences from rowing in central Florida & explained how she & Karen had driven 100 miles round trip every morning just to row at 3am in the morning. I added that if our focus was to “Shop South Lake” why would we want to force our talented athletes to drive all the way to Orange County when Lake County was historic for it’s gorgeous waterways. I also mentioned our recent visit to the UCF Rowing arena that had a scholarship program for 100, yet none of the ladies were originally from Lake County. If our youths had the oppertunity to learn the sport how many “Tiger Woods” of rowing could we find in our community?
“
As our meeting came to a close Darren said slowly….”I like the idea…I really do. I’ll talk to my boss about it and he will have to discuss it with the council but I will see what I can do for you.” There seemed to be a sense of surprise in his voice. We had not asked for any money or big promises. We just wanted to have an equal opportunity to enjoy the lake & use a building that had been boarded up for years. He said something like, “this seems like the missing piece [of the puzzle]down there. Clermont has the running, swimming & biking but nothing really focusing on the waterways. Rowing could help bring that aspect back into what the [Waterfront Park] area is all about.” God willing we will be able to walk our row boats out into the water near Waterfront Park, use the wonderful bathroom facilities and make the old abandoned boathouse near the old Bell Ceramics property as the official home for “Lake County Rowing Club” this summer as we help our community LEARN TO ROW.
On the advice of Ann Dupee, Dennis Smolarek & Esther Catino (Lake County Library) we went to the Community Foundation where Paul & Bruce helped get us in to see Brett Jones. Brett agreed to help us get our 501.c3 for FREE! His partner, a CPA will do the accounting side for about the cost of the filing fees which equal around $800 but that is something Morten & I can take from our savings (Morten hopes to be able to work soon but the Visa center says now they lost all the papers AGAIN.) We still need to raise the $1200 for insurance before we can actually work with any kids but we are working towards it like Morten says, “learn to walk before we run.” So step by step we are making this happen. It’s Morten’s dream & I will do whatever I can to make it come true. We fight constantly, but Morten has never really asked anything from me except this rowing club so I will make it happen, by hook or by crook, if I have to knock on every door in Clermont & Lake County:D Morten has already gotten two 8 person rowing boats, equipment & services donated equaling almost $100,000.00. The least I can do is knock on a few doors…
Special thanks go out to Mark & Dawn for really opened my eyes to how much we have to do to be able to use City property. We would take our responsibility seriously & treasure the gift it would be. We topped of the afternoon by eating lunch at Amanda’s place,
[*Giggles...I checked out Gem of the Hills & have been reading it little by little to Morten. He can read English of course, but he loves to listen to me read. I think it's easier for him to understand that way since he doesn't think completely in English yet:D] He’s admitted he already thinks of the boathouse as ours and Lake Minneola as our club’s home.
