Happy Easter 2012

It’s that time of year again!

One of two times a year children are allowed to trample thier friends in the endless pursuit of goodies.

Let us not forget the reason for the season and take time to join us at Real Life in Clermont Florida or celebrate in your own way.

As usual, I will be surrounded by my larger than life family; mom, dad, sister Terry (her hubby & 4 kids), my brother (AnnMarie & thier 3 kids) and of course Jeffrey (& possibly a dozen of his closest friends). We always welcome those without family around to share in our Easter egg hunts, kick ball tournaments and all day BBQ’s. It’s all about family and all about fun. Never any rules, just bring your appetite and on open heart:)

First Day of School

The first day of school is always a day of mixed blessings…for some, it’s a tearful goodbye to your “Baby” as you send them off to begin their lives as a BIG GIRL or BOY with lunch bag in hand…for other, more senior parents it is a day to CELEBRATE: WooT!!! They are finally back to school;)

No matter where in your parenting career you may find yourself, today is a BIG day.

Remember you can never get the time back so feel free to cry, hug, hold on to until the last second the bus doors close or just flat out scream, “I LOVE YOU BABY…I’LL BE WAITING FOR YOU RIGHT HERE!!!”

(Try not to do the last part after they get into high school. My son’s peers seem to like it, but I don’t think my son did. Just a lil tip.)

On my son’s first day at school, I took a little extra time to pack magical kisses in each of his pockets. I had read something somewhere about mommy’s giving their children “magical kisses” in case they were ever seperated so I thought, what better to give Jeffrey for his trip to school?

As we stood by the front door posing for pictures I mentally reviewed everything my baby boy would need for his frist day & of course said it out loud so Jeffrey would know what to expect: “Lunch box- check, bus route pinned to your shirt-check, Name & phone number written on backpack- check, imaginary kisses is each pocket-check!”

“What mommy? Why do I have magic kisses in my pockets?” Jeffrey asked.

“Well, when you go to school I won’t be there in case you fall down or get scared. If that happens & you wish I were there to “kiss it & make it better,” just reach into your pocket & pull out this kiss (I kissed my palm, closed it real quick & slid it into his pcoket). It will be just like I am there & I will feel you need me from wherever I am & send extra love right away. Just in case, I’ll give you two. Never can be too careful…” I explained.

Jeffrey smiled his little, “whatever you say mom,” smile. He knew it made me feel better to send him with his special magical kisses & that made him confident things were going to be OK!

Today as you send your babies off to meet their future, remember: No matter how old they get, they will always be your baby & no one can make it better, like you can.

It takes a lot of love to be able to let go…#GodBless

How Twitter changed my life…

“The average person changes careers 8 – 10 times in their lifetime.”

I’ve never been afraid to try new things, so when my friends in the IT community explained I could take my talent for writing, pair it with my real estate savvy & by using this “NEW THING” called Twitter, I could increase my sales I was thrilled.

“Wow…sign me up!” I thought. Sounded as easy as printing my own money.

Immediately, I began tweeting my little beak off only to realize I was in over my head. This Twitter stuff was hard work! Through trial & error, I was able to “meet” the good people of Twitterville who literally took me under their wings to help me Google my way through learning everything from WordPress to HTML.

One of my biggest supporters & resources was Matt Ball, a recruiter for Kforce Tech Orlando. After an initial tweet of advice on an IT related question, we realized we lived in the same county, practically the same city & both had common interests. Our Twitter friendship grew until we regularly attended networking events & helped each other grow our Twitter followings.

When an opportunity became available for an account manager in Orlando, Matt immediately tweeted me to ask, “have you ever considered a career in technology?”

I was amazed. I honestly never had considered the possibility & probably never would have if it weren’t for Twitter allowing me to meet someone like Matt.

I said yes.

Within a month of the 1st tweet about the account manager position I was on the job at Kforce Orlando. After an impressive training “boot camp” from Paul Winters, John Megally, Joley Mastanduno led by Jennifer Grey, I was able to get my first start within my 1st month.

Looking back, I would have never thought something as simple as 140 characters could change my life but it did. Twitter provided me with a connection to someone who not only cared enough about my success to help me, but keep that connection strong enough to allow him to recruit me for his team.

I just want to thank Matt Ball & my entire Kforce Orlando team. I can honestly say, I love my new career & I owe it all to Twitter.

Top 10 Reasons NOT to accept a counter offer

"Should I accept a counter offer from my company after I've already found a new job?"

As the economy begins to recover, top IT employers industry wide are fighting to keep the employees they have from moving into jobs offering higher pay  & often more career opportunity.

Once again, the focus in the job market is moving out of the hands of the employer & back into the hands of the candidate, as trained & experienced IT professionals are becoming harder to find.

The questions job seekers are asking themselves now is:

“Should I stay or should I go?”

TOP 10 Reasons NOT to ACCEPT a counter offer:

  1. Statistics show that if you accept or solicit a counteroffer, the probability of you voluntarily leaving, getting fired, or being demoted within one (1) year is extremely high. “69% of employees who accept a counter offer leave their current employer within 6 months of accepting that counter offer” according to recent reports from  Bill Humbert www.recruiterguy.com.
  2. Company culture, practices, and policies seldom change. The same circumstances that are causing you to consider a career move will eventually repeat themselves in the future.
  3. Consider this: What type of organization do you work for if you have to threaten to resign before they recognize your value or wake-up and see the problems?
  4. You have now made your employer aware that you are unhappy. From this day on, your loyalty, fidelity, and motives will always be under suspicion.
  5. Where is the money for the counteroffer coming from? Is it merely your next raise early? Is it coming from another department’s budget? All companies have wage and salary guidelines. Deviations from those guidelines can create parity issues amongst other employees and, therefore, animosity.
  6. When promotion time comes around, your employer will remember your resignation. Promotion and raises will be harder to come by.
  7. All organizations, at some time or another, go through difficult times that require cutbacks or reductions. When that happens, your employer may then “honor” your resignation after-the-fact by laying you off.
  8. Once you accept the counteroffer, it is not uncommon for organizations to start networking and diplomatically looking for a person with similar qualifications as yours. This is done to hedge against your possible departure in the future.
  9. To some, accepting a counteroffer is an insult to professional pride–a feeling that you were “bought off.”

     10.  Once the word gets out, and it will, the relationship that you now enjoy with your peers, subordinates, and supervisors will be different. You may lose respect from these people.
